Haystack, In Progress

April 10, 2012 By Ann

This is a new quilt, “Haystack” , that I’ve begun in Ruth McDowell’s final class at Empty Spools Seminars.

Haystack is a large basaltic monolith with its toes in the ocean along the Oregon coast.  The town of Cannon Beach sprung up here.  At low tide, its possible to walk to Haystack, and the view the wonderous creatures trapped in the tide pools created by the rock debris on the beach.  In photographing this feature,   I was able to capture the “needles”, two other basalt features close by that will also be included in the quilt.

I’ve chosen soft striped fabrics to capture the angular of the rock faces, and in this photo am auditioning possible fabrics for the beach.

For students looking for a fine instructor for the Ruth B. McDowell style of quilt design, I strongly recommend Ann P. Shaw's classes.
