First Harvest

January 24, 2012 By Ann

First Harvest (2003, 33×55)
My husband spent a great deal of time establishing an orchard planted primarily with heritage apple trees. Once planted, it takes several years before young apple trees will bear fruit. After three years, this tree bravely yielded its first harvest on a single branch. Sadly, the apples vanished the next day, devoured by deer. This quilt commemorates our first apple harvest.  The straight lines of the abstracted apples and leaves contrast with the curves of the large apple that recedes into the background.

The straight lines of the abstracted apples and leaves are softened by the curves of the large apple that recedes into the background.   [Sold, Private collection]

For students looking for a fine instructor for the Ruth B. McDowell style of quilt design, I strongly recommend Ann P. Shaw's classes.
